Feeling Blue?

February Blues - It affects many of us

The winter months affect me deeply. I feel less motivated, not as joyful, and every day tasks and responsibilities feel like a major chore to me. It is a form of Depression that usually passes when the seasons change.

This is called Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD. I spoke with my sister about this only yesterday. I don't enjoy the winter, so I stay indoors more, experiencing less sunlight and less nature. She loves the cold and doesn't mind going out at all. Unlike her, the cold winter months, in combination with less sunlight and nature, leaves me feeling blue for sure.

To help me through the winter months until spring and summer arrives, I find myself practicing the healing art of Reiki more and more.

I have worked as a Reiki Master since 2007 and I get asked all the time ‘What is Reiki?”.

Reiki is a hands on healing art that has been with the Earth since it formed. Reiki is a Japanese word meaning “universal life-force energy”.

It works to support a normal energy flow of ki (life force energy) which may enhance and accelerate your body’s ability to heal itself.

Those who I have worked with (and myself) have reported feeling:

  • More relaxed
  • More grounded
  • Less emotional
  • Reduced stress levels
  • Increased energy
  • Reduced pain levels (or pain gone completely)
  • Better sleep
  • Increased ability to make decisions

What does a Reiki session look like?

During a Reiki Session, you will lie fully clothed on a table, with warm and comfortable blankets and pillows. Soft, relaxing music will play in the background, and the pleasant scent of essential oils will increase your relaxation experience.

The Reiki Practitioner will place their hands on or slightly above the major Chakra areas of your body from head to toe. (see Chakra descriptions below).

You may feel the Reiki energy as heat, cold, vibration or even tingling. You will likely feel extremely calm and relaxed, and most fall asleep during a treatment.

Each treatment lasts 45 to 60 minutes.

Directly after a Reiki session, you may feel so relaxed that you feel ‘spaced out’.  I encourage you to take the time to sit, drink water and talk with me about your experience for 10-15 minutes before you drive.

A Reiki Treatment once a month or so as a ‘tune up’ will help you bring your body and mind back in to balance, release negative emotions, reduce stress and leave you feeling more relaxed, peaceful and whole.

Understanding The Chakra System

Chakras align vertically down the center of the body on the front and on the back.  They are located on the etheric level, meaning the energy field just above the physical body.  The word Chakra comes from the Sanskrit meaning wheel.  These are emotional centers that link the physical body to the endocrine glands.  The endocrine system controls the hormones within our bodies that affect our moods and emotions.

The Chakra system follows the colors of the rainbow from red to purple and by wearing the color of a chakra this can increase its effectiveness.

 Let’s review the Chakras:

The seventh major chakra is the Crown Chakra. The crown is located at the top of the head and slightly to the back of the highest part of the skull.  Physically its referral organ is the Pineal gland, which is responsible for the body’s day-night cycle and the production of the hormone Melatonin.  The Crown chakra is our connection with spirit and is one of the two chakras that should be left open to the universe.  Its function is to receive energies and light from the Universe, and is represented usually by the color violet or white.  Issues relating to this chakra may concern emotional feelings of despair or isolation. Physically, if the Crown is out of balance your ability to bring in any energy from above could be restricted which can result in general fatigue.

The Third Eye Chakra is sixth chakra, and is located above and between the eyes and is associated physically with the Pituitary gland.  This endocrine gland is responsible for several functions including the regulation of thyroid and gonads, the adrenal cortex and water balance.  Your intuitive abilities derive from this chakra and if a blockage is present can appear as headaches, eye problems or confusion on life issues.  This is the women’s power center and represents the creation of personal realities. The color represented is Indigo or blue-black.

The fifth chakra is the Throat Chakra and is located at the base of the neck where the hollow is just above your breastbone.  Physically it is associated with the Thyroid and Parathyroid glands which control metabolism and blood calcium levels respectfully.  Your creativity is located here, and in this world many of our emotions and feelings are repressed for social reasons.  Many people’s throat chakras are in need of energy and healing, some indications are sore throats, stage fright, thyroid problems or throat cancer.  The color associated with the Throat is a light blue.

The fourth chakra is the Heart Chakra found over the upper and mid chest area and is associated physically with the heart organ and the thymus gland.  We know what the heart function is for, while the thymus’s job is controlling the immune response within our bodies. Spiritually, the Heart chakras concerns are about self-love and love for others.  When there is too much activity here on the ethereal field it may indicate that the person is giving too much of themselves away.  Their energy is leaving their ethereal field to be drained off to others.  This is common with most people attracted to the Reiki energy, as they tend to be givers rather than takers in personality.  The colors associated with the heart chakra are green (for the earth connection) and rose (for the spiritual connection).

The third Chakra is the Solar Plexus Chakra located below the ribcage and corresponds with the pancreas.  The pancreas is responsible for creating insulin and glucagon, which help regulate the amount of sugar in our blood.   This is the men’s power center and is the place where energy from the sun can also enter to supply our bodies and souls.  The color here is yellow and diseases associated with this chakra can include digestive issues, alcoholism, and other food issues.

The second chakra is the Belly or Sacral Chakra and for men it refers to their spleen and for women their uterus, as both have purifying functions for the body.  First impressions are stored here whether they be pleasant or not, and healing at this center can include recovery from past abuse or fertility issues.  If a blockage is detected here the person may feel the need to protect him or herself and feel insecure in life. The color here is orange.

The first chakra is the Root Chakra and is located at the genitals and is associated with the adrenal glands, which are found on top of the kidneys.  In the East it is known as the Gateway to Life and Death, here also is the place of birth and re-birth, a survival center.  Health concerns here could relate to reproductive or bone issues.  Healing here involves the basic issues such as, food, shelter, clothing, the desire to live or die and grounding.  This is the other chakra that should be either left open or released several times throughout the day.  The color associated here is red.

Lastly, is the Earth chakra which is located at your feet, this chakra is found at the arch of each foot and is considered the grounding chakra.  There is not an endocrine gland or organ relating to this chakra; in fact most written material would not even consider any chakras that extend physically past the Root.  Chakras are always referred in visuals with a person sitting in the lotus position. Grounding and releasing energy to the Earth, and receiving energy from Earth is crucial to our well being.

You can begin working with balancing your Chakras today by simply wearing the color of the Chakra or eating foods that are the same color as the Chakra.

For example, if you are not sleeping well, wear the color purple or white and eat Purple foods (purple cabbage, grapes or eggplant) or white foods (mushrooms, onions, cauliflower, potatoes, garlic, coconut)

If you are feeling insecure, wear the color orange and eat orange foods (oranges, carrots, apricot, cantelope, mangos, orange peppers, sweet potatoes).
